Interesting Facts About the British Monarchy

An obsession to some, a footnote to others, there’s no denying just how interesting the stories stemming from royalty can be. Here are three interesting facts about the British monarchy you may not have known.

The rent is Due. During a ceremony known as the Ceremony of Quit Rents, the city of London pays rent to the Queen of England for two small pieces of property. Although nobody knows the exact location of the Queen’s property, the rent has been paid every autumn since the early 13th century. For the last 800 or so years the price of rent has remained unchanged at one knife, one axe, six horseshoes, and 61 nails.

Please, have a seat. While visiting the set of Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland Queen Elizabeth refused to sit on the Iron Throne. It’s not that the Queen disliked the show, or that she feared it would be uncomfortable, she actually refused the opportunity to have a seat on the iconic pop culture seat for legal reasons. As David Benioff, the show’s co-creator and showrunner, told Esquire: “Apparently the Queen of England is not allowed to sit on a foreign throne…”

Independence Day! Throughout its history, the British Empire has invaded all but 22 countries. Although once a massive and impressive entity, 66 countries have now declared independence from the empire, meaning that there are 52 days per year where at least one country is celebrating their independence from England.
