Although an Irish and Gaelic tradition for over 1000 years, St. Patrick’s Day has become a huge event in the U.S., with some rather epic celebrations. Here are three fun facts about St. Patrick’s Day celebrations you may not have known.
The green river. Chicago boasts the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the U.S., eclipsed only by New York, and each year to celebrate the Saint the city dyes the Chicago river green. To do so, however, it takes a whopping 45 pounds of green dye! The city started the tradition in 1962, and before the advent of more efficient dyes that first year used 100 pounds of dye!
That’s a whole lot of Guinness. Nothing could be more traditional than a pint of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day, with many pubs and bars dying the beer green for the occasion. And since St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world, that means roughly 13 millions pints of Guinness will be poured worldwide to mark the occasion!
Eat your greens. Corned beef and cabbage makes for a traditional Irish meal alongside the bangers and mash and beef stew, so it’s no surprise that stores stock up on cabbage just before St Patrick’s day. What may be surprising, however, is just how much they stock up, as cabbage sales soar by 70% just before the big day!
