Alternative medicine has been on the rise for a while now, and numerous people swear by it. One of its many systems is naturopathy, where it’s practitioners, and patients alike, boast about its plentiful benefits. Many others, though, claim it’s no more effective than a placebo effect.
What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a practice of alternative medicine that’s built on the idea that illnesses can be treated and prevented without any use of pharmaceutical drugs. They’re treated instead with the use of herbs, controlled diet, exercise, and massage - a natural way to strengthen the body’s immunity. Some benefits to naturopathy include, but aren’t limited to, helping with sleep, disease prevention, and treatment of disorders.
The Controversy
Naturopath practitioners and their patients believe naturopathy is beneficial for people’s health. It comes in the form of many different types of practices, including herbalism, acupuncture, reflexology, etc. It’s become a staple for many due to its natural ways of helping with the body’s healing process, such as exposure to natural elements, healthy diet, etc. The controversy is that some people solely rely on the techniques offered by naturopathy, rejecting any treatment from modern medicine. That said, other naturopaths believe that naturopathy is a complementary form of medical practice rather than an alternative form. However, the concern is that ill people won't get the proper treatment for their ailments. The lack of scientific basis poses a potential danger if people reject modern medicine.
